New York City car accident trends

Car accidents happen all over the New York City metropolitan area, including Queens and the Bronx. Statistics can show a breakdown of how frequently they occur in the boroughs and in the city as a whole and who is affected.

How many accidents occur in the five boroughs?

It would be reasonable to think that Manhattan is the New York City borough that sees the most motor vehicle accidents due to its size and the sheer number of people there. However, Queens ranked at the top with nearly 66,000 accidents during the period studied. People were injured in around 24% of all of those accidents.

Meanwhile, the Bronx experienced more than 31,000 vehicle accidents, which made up 14.1% of collisions in the New York City area. In spite of having fewer than half of the number of crashes as Queens, around 29% of the accidents that occurred in the Bronx resulted in injuries.

Accidents increased in the last two years

In recent years, there was an increase in car accidents in New York City. Within the first three months of 2021, more than 4,000 drivers were injured while over 2,500 passengers also suffered serious injuries. Sadly, within the first half of that year, over 100 people lost their lives in car accidents. Some of the victims were pedestrians and cyclists, but most were those riding inside motor vehicles.

There was also an increase in hit-and-run accidents during this time. Many drivers engaged in more reckless behaviors behind the wheel such as speeding, drag racing, road rage or distracted driving. All of those behaviors increase the risk of a deadly crash occurring and catastrophic injuries being sustained by the victims.

Many of the most serious collisions during the period studied took place over the weekend. Accidents resulting in fatalities occurred most often between 4 and 6 PM, but some also happened between 7 AM and 10:30 AM. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, most car accidents occur between 3 and 6 PM.
